Travel Coverage

Taking a Vacation? Have you Confirmed your Out of Country Coverage? (as at Nov 2023)

Unforeseen medical emergencies can cause major disruptions when travelling, which can be made even worse when proper coverage is not in place. Fortunately, your group benefits plan has Out of Country coverage for emergency care for you and your immediate family members. It’s important to properly document your carrier’s coverage & policies regarding pre-existing illnesses/diseases.

Out of Country Coverage Documentation

Download your Out of Country card to your smartphone “wallet” or save a photo of your coverage details to easily access, if needed.

Travelling with Pre-existing Conditions

  •  90 Day Stability Clause

  • Requires members to be stable from a pre-existing condition for at least 90 days.

  • This includes no changes in treatment; symptoms have not worsened and no new symptoms have developed that suggest any medical complications could arise during time of travel.

  • It is suggested for those with pre-existing conditions to contact their carrier prior to traveling to ensure proper coverage is in place.

International Students with Pre-existing Conditions

  • Dependents that are studying abroad should have additional coverage in place, as group plans limit travel coverage to 60, 90 or 180 days at a time.

  • Any pre-existing conditions are also subject to the stability limitation outlined above.

  • If a dependent student has reoccurring treatment for a condition, it is advised to contact the carrier to confirm if they are considered medically stable and are able to travel out of the country.

Alternative Individual Travel Coverage for Pre-existing Conditions

  • Those with pre-exiting conditions may require additional coverage to supplement the group plan coverage.

  • Suggested providers with competitive stability clauses:

  • Medi-Quote:

  • Individual travel insurance with a 7-day stability option.

  • Other options at a cost to insure other conditions.

  • In order for us to assist you with this, please use the following link when requesting a quote: MediQuote

  • Tugo

  • Individual travel insurance with a 7-day stability period for ages 59 and under if the trip is less than 35 days.
